Ever since its foundation in 1870, the Grand Hotel Wien has been one of the pillars of Viennese society. Since then, it has been gaining in importance and attractiveness and continued to be the perfect feast of luxury and taste for Vienna's visitors.
The history of the Grand Hotel Wien began in 1862, when the well-known Viennese hotelier Anton Schneider acquired the building plot on which the hotel stands until today. This building, designed by one of the most renowned architects, Carl Tietz, first was a furnished house, maison meublée. It only was May 10, 1870, that this building turned into the first Grand Hotel in Vienna, boasting 300 rooms, 200 bathrooms, steam elevators, and a telegraph office, which truly was quite innovative at that time.
Up to the present day, the Grand Hotel Wien is considered among the few social centers of Vienna by society's elite. Its prestige generally meant that it was impossible to get a room, since the demand was always high. In 1894, for instance, the hotel was chosen by the "King of Waltz," Johann Strauss, for his 50-year jubilee on stage.
In 1911, a big annexation of two neighboring houses in Kaerntner Ring 11 and 13, purchased and then upgraded, provided the hotel with 100 more rooms and a couple of elegant salons to increase lodging capacity for its exclusive clients.
The Grand Hotel Wien reopened to the public in 1994 following a transformation period. Its glorified past merged with today's luxury. One of Austria's best hotels today is that one that offers the latest amenities, complemented by preserved historical grandeur.
Located in the heart of Vienna, right on the Wiener Ringstraße, near the Vienna State Opera and the bustling Kaerntner Street, guests really find themselves close to the city's cultural and historic riches. Guests of the Grand Hotel Wien can look forward to a stylish and elegant ambiance with sprawling luxurious rooms that offer maximum comfort. The Grand Hotel Wien still conveys the timeless charm and hospitality of Vienna, welcoming visitors from all across the world to experience the most famous luxury hotel in the city.
